With award-winning attractions, great shopping and a wealth of places to eat and drink, this beautiful city makes for the perfect weekend break.

Beaches

Skegness is perhaps the classic beach resort for a staycation. Don’t let snobs talk it down. It’s really nice. Whilst on a cloudy day it might not be Insta-worthy, on a sunny day the long wide sandy beach is a joy.

Cleethorpes is a small seaside village located on the Humber estuary. Award-winning gardens, a long sandy beach, and a promenade aside, you’ll hopefully find there’s quite a lot of interesting activities to take part in.

Can’t decide on whether to go to Skegness or Cleethorpes? Well, go slap bang in the middle of the two at Sutton-on-Sea. It’s a little bit ‘low-key’ so you won’t find scores of arcades (or noisy families).

It makes the ideal place to enjoy the best of the beach and surrounding areas too. Hire a cycle and go for a promenade bike ride or pay a visit to the nearby Seal Sanctuary Wildlife Centre.

Ever seen a baby seal? Time it right when visiting Donna Nook Nature Reserve and you just might. From Late October to the start of December Grey Seals find the 6-mile section of coastline is just perfect to introduce their pups to the world.

As a serious note, we would advise leaving dogs at home, aside from disturbing the seals, seals can carry pathogens that are very dangerous to your four-legged friend.

History

With its winding Georgian streets, cute cafes, and hidden courtyards, it’s easy to see why Stamford is one of the destinations of choice for film producers.

Period dramas are filmed here regularly, and that’s because feels properly authentic. Beautiful wooden coach houses still provide a good meal and a mug of ale for weary travellers, much as they did when they were built.

For those of you looking to harness your inner Jane Austen why not take a horse and coach (or more likely the car) over to Burghley house? You may recognise it from Pride and Prejudice as it featured in several scenes. Swoon in the lawns or doth protest at the weather and take a look around the beautiful Georgian interior.

The seat of the County, Lincoln is an ideal base for which to strike out and explore. Beautiful architecture and gorgeous winding cobbled streets aside, there is plenty to see and do. Dining, shopping, and drinking can all be embarked upon in abundance as you would expect, however, there are a few things that you won’t find in many other places.

Lincoln cathedral is the third-largest in the country and remains in impressive splendour, which was the idea as it used to hold huge cultural and political significance.

Lincoln Castle is also a rare treat, with a fully intact (and foreboding) wall that you can walk around. It is packed with stories, whether you want to pander to your inner Norman and read the Magna Carta or listen to gruesome stories about those imprisoned within its walls, there will be something for you.
